Over 4,000 devotees and visitors gathered at the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Birmingham on Saturday 25 October 2008 to take part in this year’s Annakut celebrations. The theme of the celebrations was ‘Glorious India’, honouring the ageless values and spirituality that India has offered to the world.

The central attraction on the day was a grand offering of more than 450 different food dishes, drinks, fruits, vegetables and other unique items.

In addition, an inspiring exhibition with visuals, presentations, and multimedia shows took visitors on a journey through the rich culture, heritage and values of India.

A special ‘Kidz Corner’ was also arranged where face-painting, games, videos and other activities led to hours of fun and learning for children of all ages.

A number of dignitaries and special guests also attended the event. The Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Cllr. Rashid, expressed his delight on seeing such a diversity of visitors on the day. He personally wished everyone a Happy Diwali and a prosperous New Year.

The Mayor of Solihull, Cllr. David Bell, said, “I am extremely impressed with the organisation of the event and the participation of the youngsters and volunteers. The exhibition was also very impressive and completely relevant to this day and age. It has most definitely been a thoroughly enjoyable and inspirational experience. ”

Other guests included Liberal Democrat MP for Solihull, Lorely Burt, as well as Cllrs Jerry Evans, Paula Smith, Penny Wagg, and Mr V.V. Narayanan from the Consulate General of India.

Perhaps the best description of the event was provided by Mrs J. Wright, a first-time visitor from Solihull: “I never realised the depth of India’s culture before visiting this temple. Even more so, I think it is truly amazing that this culture and these values are being maintained so far away from India itself, and especially in this day and age. All the volunteers of BAPS should be specially commended for their extraordinary efforts and noble service. Well Done!”
