Over 2,000 devotees and visitors gathered at the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Ashton-Under-Lyne on Wednesday 29 October 2008 to take part in this year’s Diwali, Annakut and New Year celebrations. The central attraction on the day was a grand offering of more than 650 different food dishes, drinks, fruits, vegetables and other unique items. As guests entered the Mandir on the ground floor, they were greeted by young children in the traditional Indian manner with marks of welcome and auspiciousness.

Interactive activities were an added feature for the day. These included craft stalls, henna and face painting, a dhol (traditional Indian drums) workshop, and relaxation games. An exhibition explaining BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha’s activities was also on display, and a giant bouncy obstacle course added excitement for children and adults alike.

The Worshipful Civic Mayor of Tameside Cllr Jack Davis expressed his gratitude for being able to participate in the celebrations, and prayed for the health, prosperity and happiness of the people of Tameside as he performed the Abhishek ritual of Shri Nilkanth Varni. The day was concluded with an assembly in the presence of the Mayor.
